A cousin from my Garr side - Edwin Roberts Kimball - BYU football and basketball coach


Often referred to as "Mr. BYU" for his Eddie Kimball nearly fifty years of involvement in Cougar athletics, Kimball joined the BYU faculty in 1935, teaching accounting and basketball. 

In 1937, he was offered the position of head football and basketball coach and athletic director. He coached basketball four years, football nine years, and was athletic director for twenty-seven years. 

During World War Il, he served as director of Recreation, Survival and General Welfare for the United States Pacific Fleet. His air/sea rescue programs are credited with saving the lives of 9,000 Navy pilots. 

After the war, Kimball returned to BYU as athletic director and facility planner. He was influential in expanding physical facilities at BY U, including the baseball diamond, the football stadium, field house extensions, the swimming pool in the Physical Education Building, and the eventual development and location of the Marriott Center. 

Kimball was named to four halls of fame — National Football Hall of Fame, Utah State Sports Hall of fame, BYU Hall of Fame, and the Athletic Directors Hall of Fame. He also received two Navy commendation ribbons and was an Honorary Rear Admiral in the United States Navy.
