I am always amaze of what can happen on a farm...
from the wife of my 2nd cousin 2 times removed (Annie Selana Hanson): I have done nearly every task on a farm except milk a cow, and I tried many times to do that. I well remember one time when I was very helpful. I went out to help my husband with a sick horse.
The horse had been sick for some time but was recovering. In this particular day we thought it would be a good idea if we could get him on his feet. We had a hay derrick that was fifty feet high to the point of the boom pole. My husband built a sling to put under the horse to take his weight while he stood up for a while.
We had a fine spirited team hooked to the derrick cable. They would mind my husband perfectly, and I thought they would me.
I was supposed to drive the team up two or three feet while my husband helped the sick horse get his equilibrium. But when I started the team and they felt the weight of their load, they simply pulled me by the lines taking the poor sick horse to the top of the derrick with a jam that threw the horse out of the sling. The horse was cured of all ailments when it lit.
Now I know what my dad meant when he would say, If you keep "horsing around" somebody will get hurt.
